Random Acts of Kindness

Reading through yet another textbook, I came across an idea that I just had to share with all of you!

Now... this is a secret... don't let any child know what I am about to share. It will ruin the idea and it will be forever broken!! You ready....

Kids like to help and getting to help is a reward!

Shocking isn't it? Especially since we have yet to master how to get them to keep their bedrooms clean!

My textbook has a "Spot Light on Teachers" portion which I usually browse through but rely on my blog buddies and personal experience for their more current information. Anywho, this one caught my eye.

For this teacher, homework goes home on Fridays and is returned on Thursdays. Each Thursday, the teacher goes through and checks who has completed all the work for the week including homework and has had good behavior. If they have, they get 20 minutes to do a "Random Act of Kindness." If not, they are stuck in the classroom completing their work.

What can the students do?

Clean the hall for the janitor, pick up trash on the playground, shelf books in the library, make copies for another teacher, read a story to a younger class, tutor a younger child who is struggling, cut items out for a teacher, make and take a snack to another class, file papers in the office, change out a bulleting board, and so much more.

The options are limitless and are bound only by your imagination. I this is something my children would love especially if they get to choose which RAK to do. Can you imagine how much school spirit and pride these children have?

Imagine what kind of world we would live in tomorrow if we taught every student to perform random acts of kindness, not for the validation of doing something but because it is rewarding to do so. How will these students change the future of our world?

Right now Kreative in Kinder has taken on the task of helping 726 teachers who were affected by the recent tornados. Your students can help by writing letters of encouragement! There is a lot these teachers need and together we can make a difference!

Mother Theresa has an amazing quote "We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop." If we all decide that what we are doing is not enough, there will be no one left doing anything.
