The NPR recently published an article entitled "Think your an Auditory or Visual Learner? Scientists Say it is Unlikely" The article states that there is no scientific proof for learning styles yet so much has been written and focuses on teaching to a child's learning style.
I am not sure whether or not I agree. On one hand, most people have a combination of learning styles or prefer a specific method of teaching for a specific subject. I have also seen differences in learning styles based upon the age of the student. On the other hand, I know that there are certain techniques that I use and things that I favor over others as I know I will learn the most from using one style or another.

In university I was trained to incorporate every learner style into each lesson. I know that I am a visual learner, so as a teacher I find it easier to make more visually driven lessons. I have to remind myself to incorporate the other styles as well. With that said I think that it is important to understand how your students learn and how they prefer to learn. Some of my friends always start the year off with a "learner style quiz" in order to get to know their students.

The Crazy Adventures of a University Graduate
Hi there! I'm am just replying to your comment on my blog.

I love your idea of a sub tub! I am still reading through your post. I love the details of your schedule but I wanted to let you know I was confused on one thing. One is GREAT!
8:30 am... lunch count. First you want the sub to have everyone vote (I understand that part) but whose names are in the black plastic thingy? Why do they not vote with the rest of the class? Why do I specifically call out these guys? Just thought I would share my confusion in the hopes it helps you take a great plan to an amazing one.
Everyone's names are in the black basket in the morning and the students come in and vote for lunch first thing in the morning. So after everyone has voted, the sub check the black basket.
That means that those names in the basket are students who forgot to vote for lunch or they are absent. It's not about calling them out, it's about taking attendance and an accurate lunch count. :)
Just wanted to clarify! :)

Ah ha! When I was reading I had a picture of my son's first grade teacher standing at the front of the room calling out the lunch options and counting the hands that were raised and writing down the number. I just couldn't figure out why some kids were not raising their hands. LOL!
