Vampirate Series: Book 2
Tide of Terror
Author: Justin Somper
*SPOILER ALERT*
Book 2 is the story of four characters and their individual journeys. The book starts off with Sidorio, the Vampirate who was exciled in Book 1. He is searching for a crew and a ship. He is tired of the old captains rules about donors. He is searching for revenge. Meanwhile Connor and Grace have been reunited for three months on board The Diablo. Cheng Li has returned to the Pirate Academy and Lorcan is injured and blind after trying to protect Grace. He has stopped feeding from his donor and refuses to leave his room. He has given up on living. Grace desperately wants to get back to him and her friends aboard the pirate ship but doesn't want to leave Connor either. Connor is happy with his life as a pirate and has finally found a place to belong.
All of this changes when a friend is killed in battle. Connor is invited to visit the pirate academy for a week and of course, Grace goes along as well. Connor loves it there and is learning a lot. In fact, he plans on staying until he is betrayed. (You will have to read the book to find out how). Instead of staying at the school and joining the Pirate Federation, Connor heads back on board the Diablo to honor his commitments to Captain Wrathe.
While at the academy both Grace and Connor realize that they have different journeys in life they must take. The twins cannot stay together any longer and Grace follows her own life path; with the blessings of Connor she returns to the Vampirates. She is reunited with Lorcan and all her friends.
The pirates join Captain Wrathe in his quest for revenge after a grizzly attack on his brother. The captain of the Vampirates tell Connor how to defeat this new enemy. Connor ends up saving the day - the rogue vampirates die! Grace has committed herself to finding a cure for Lorcan.
My Opinion
The author keeps the reader continually engaged and filled with suspense. It is non-stop action and adventure. My Harry Potter/Percy Jackson lovers are excited to have a new series to pull them in.
I am so excited for book 3! There are so many other things that I should be reading at the moment but I am really enjoying these books. My oldest is now ahead of me in this series and is teasing me about book 3 and the adventures to come.
You make it sound interesting! The cover looks super scary to me. Cool that your son is reading the same series!

Hi...
ReplyDeleteI teach 4th grade and started reading them last year. I have now read all of them and I am anxiously waiting for the next book. The books spread like wildfire in my classroom and my group this year has just discovered them in the library. I worried about some of the content, but overall it is no worse than some of the things I hear about them watching on TV. I know the series was geared to middle school, but I had way too much fun reading it. Afterall it combines two things I love..Pirates and Vampires! We make puppets with our Artist in Residence each year and last year mine was a Vampirate!
So far I am okay with the content. Children are exposed to more than I ever was as a child and I try to remember that when I am reading through things. I have been surprised by past reads that have won awards and had content that I would never approve of!
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of a Vampirate puppet!
