No Owls!

Have you seen all the adorable owls that are available as clip art? At first I wasn't sure I liked them but then I was thinking of jumping on the owl bandwagon.

I mean... look at how cute! Who could resist the urge to jump for long?

Then I got the bad news... no owls allowed. It is important to be aware of the variety of cultures we serve as teachers. In my community, owls represent death to many of the Native American tribes. It is offensive to include them in any way and so... I will resist the cuteness for the comfort of my students.

It also means that I have to be aware of what I purchase when I purchase teacher-made materials or other items for my classroom. I can't use anything with owls (which I accidentally brought with me to class one day).

Are there things in your area that are popular but inappropriate due to the variety of cultures represented in your classroom?

  4. That is really sad, they would hate my blog hehe!!! I haven't heard of any forbidden things where I teach, but every school is different.

  6. Thanks for the reminder that we do need to be ever aware of our students and the community.

  9. So interesting! I love owl-themed things. We read Hoot in 6th grade here, so I have some cute stuff to go along with that and recently found some cool owl earrings and a bracelet from Kohls. I even considered owls for my new blog design.....
