Reading Attitude Survey

I started my new class this past week - 4 more classes until I complete my master's degree. I am past the halfway point... graduation is in sight. It feels good to being so close to done. On the flip side, the expectations have risen exponentially and I may end up MIA to keep up!

There are... count them... 8 textbooks for my 8 week class. Think I will be busy? I already read a few of them... ever heard of Daily 5, CAFE, or The Book Whisperer? =) Check! Those books are done! This class is all about reading, reading assessments, instilling the love of reading, why it is important to read, how to encourage people to read, etc...

As a lot of people are heading back to class soon or are already in class, I decided to share a find that I LOVE! One of my books talks about how the attitude of the reader affects their overall achievement. If you are engaged you will learn more, we all know this but do we actually apply this theory when we associate the pleasure of reading with academic success? I did not!





A reading  attitude survey like the one pictured above is a great well to tell how students feel about reading for pleasure and reading to learn. This is a free printable (click on the picture to access) featuring Garfield. Students simply circle or color each one.


This is a great way to learn more about your students and to understand their experiences with reading. I had my sons complete one and they all loved Garfield. This is designed for elementary students but I believe it would be affective with any age group.

Do you use one of these with your students? What are your thoughts on this?

I had to do the Reading Attitude Survey on a student for grad school. I never used in with a class of students - forgot about it actually. I think it would be really interesting to do it at the beginning of the year and the end of the year!
